What is the Dow Jones industrial average (DJIA)?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, not to be confused with the Dow Jones Transportation index (which was the first index), is often called, "the Dow" or "DJIA," and consists of thirty stocks which traditionally were industrial-based.

This index is considered to be a barometer of the state of the American economy. DJIA index was created in 1986 by Charles Dow. Along with the NASDAQ 100 and S&P 500 indices, it is amongst the most well-known and used stock indexes in the world.
